Ethics

As our ability to analyze human DNA improves, these and other issues related to modern genetics are emerging. How can students address these topics? The ethics module helps students develop the skills to consider complex issues by providing an ethical decision-making model as a guide.

The focus of this unit is presymptomatic testing for Huntington’s disease (HD). A case scenario describes a family of five adult siblings whose father has died of HD. The students assume the role of one of the siblings and decide whether, as that character, they would choose to be tested presymptomatically for HD. The background materials provided reflect the current state of scientific and clinical understanding of HD, and the case represents the types of dilemmas faced by individuals considering presymptomatic testing. At the end of the exercise, students sign a mock informed consent form and receive mock test results for their character.

Through this experience, students develop an appreciation for the complexity of predictive testing and practice a decision-making process that they can apply to all complex dilemmas in their lives.
